  • The Intra-Night Variability Characteristics of OJ287
We present the results of the study of visible (BVRI) intra-night variability of the BL Lac object OJ287. The observations were carried out on a total of 29 nights during the period November 1993-October 1994, with only nights with at least 4 observations being included. Three telescopes were used for the study: the 1m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope and

  • The distance to the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy: an open question
The distance of the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy is discussed in the light of new, deep photometry of the resolved stars taken in the bands V, R, and I of the Johnson-Cousins system. The tip of the red giant branch is identified beyond doubt. From its position, a distance modulus of (m - M)0 = 24.9 +/- 0.1 is derived, in disagreement with the

  • Star formation in the circumnuclear regions of barred galaxies
Barred galaxies frequently exhibit central starburst activity, typically concentrated in circumnuclear rings. Much of direct and circumstantial evidence speaks in favor of bar-induced fueling of star-forming activity in these galaxies. We present results, partly preliminary, for three galaxies which were studied through high-resolution imaging in

  • Spectropolarimetry of OJ287
The polarization spectrum of OJ287 was obtained during the 1993/94 observing campaign within the OJ-94 International Collaboration. Data were taken on December 17-18-19/1993, an on Januarty 11-12/1994. Between both periods of observations, OJ287 showed minor flare activity, where brightness raised from V=15.75 to V=15.25, and the polarization

  • Search for Faint Black Hole Transients: Results for EXO1846-031
Black hole candidates (BHCs) are increasingly found as luminous hard x-ray sources, with spectra exending up to 100-200 keV, which undergo transient outbursts and appear as "X-ray novae" for durations of typically 10-100 days. The BATSE detectors on CGRO constitute a powerful all-sky monitor and have detected the brightest of these, with peak
