  • Star formation in differentially rotating galactic disks: The physics of self-propagation.
Large-scale propagating star formation in galaxies is studied as a self-regulatin process. The model connects the energy injection by star formation with the resultin interstellar structures in a differentially rotating disc. The star formation cycl includes the formation of new stars in groups, multisupernova remnants agglomerafin the gas into

  • Nucleon-Nucleon and Pion-Nucleon Potentials from Phase Shifts using Quantum Inversion
NN and Pi-N partial wave radial potentials have been generated using the latest SM94-VPI(NN) and FA93-VPI(Pi-N) phase shifts. The potentials are used to determine the deuteron properties and to compute the 3H and 3He binding energies. The e_1 mixing angles of SM94-VPI and NY93-Nijmegen differ significantly and inversion potentials yield a P_d of 6

  • Microlensing events of the LMC are better explained by stars within the LMC than by MACHOs
The recently reported microlensing events of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have caused much excitement, and have been interpreted as due to 'dark objects' called massively compact halo objects (MACHOs) in the halo of our Galaxy. It is shown here that stars within the LMC play a dominant role as gravitational lenses and can indeed account for the

  • Measurements of dust extinction in highly inclined spiral galaxies.
We study the extinction properties of dust in the well-defined dust lanes of four highly inclined galaxies using U-, B-, V-, R- and I-band CCD and J- and K'-band Near-Infrared array images. For three of these galaxies, we could use the symmetry of the underlying light profile to obtain absolute extinction values in the dust lanes. Maximum values
