  • The Influence of Bulge Profile Shapes on Claims for a Scale-free Hubble Sequence for Spiral Galaxies
We investigate recent claims that the Hubble sequence of spiral galaxies is scale-free. Fundamental to this investigation is the fact that within the photometric data of 86 spiral galaxies from de Jong & van der Kruit-from which these claims were made-a trend exists between morphological type and bulge profile shape. While late-type spiral bulges

  • The effective temperature scale of giant stars (F0-K5). I. The effective temperature determination by means of the IRFM
We have applied the InfraRed Flux Method (IRFM) to a sample of approximately 500 giant stars in order to derive their effective temperatures with an internal mean accuracy of about 1.5% and a maximum uncertainty in the zero point of the order of 0.9%. For the application of the IRFM, we have used a homogeneous grid of theoretical model atmosphere

  • TeV gamma-ray observations of the Crab and MKN 501 during moonshine and twilight
TeV gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula and Mkn 501 were detected with the HEGRA CT1 imaging Cerenkov telescope during periods when the moon was shining and during twilight. This was accomplished by lowering the high voltage supply of the photomultipliers in fixed steps up to 13%. No other adjustments were made and no filters were used. Laser

  • P Cygni: An Extraordinary Luminous Blue Variable
P Cygni is a prototype for understanding mass loss from massive stars. This textbook star is known first of all because of two great eruptions in the 17th century. In the first half of this century it has given its name to a class of stars which are characterized by spectral lines consisting of nearly undisplaced emissions accompanied by a blue

  • Jets, Knots, and Tails in Planetary Nebulae: NGC 3918, K1-2, and Wray 17-1
We analyze optical images and high-resolution, long-slit spectra of three planetary nebulae that possess collimated, low-ionization features. NGC 3918 is composed of an inner, spindle-shaped shell mildly inclined with respect to the plane of the sky. Departing from the polar regions of this shell, we find a two-sided jet expanding with velocities
