  • The central region of spiral galaxies as seen by Herschel. M 81, M 99, and M 100
With appropriate spatial resolution, images of spiral galaxies in thermal infrared (~10 μm and beyond) often reveal a bright central component, distinct from the stellar bulge, superimposed on a disk with prominent spiral arms. ISO and Spitzer studies have shown that much of the scatter in the mid-infrared colors of spiral galaxies is related to

  • The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) high-resolution near-infrared multi-object fiber spectrograph
The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) will use a dedicated 300-fiber, narrow-band (1.5-1.7 micron), high resolution (R~30,000), near-infrared spectrograph to survey approximately 100,000 giant stars across the Milky Way. This survey, conducted as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS III), will revolutionize

  • Surface layer characterization at Paranal Observatory
In this paper the Paranal Surface Layer characterization is presented. Causes, physics and behavior of the SL above Paranal surface are discussed. The analysis is developed using data from different turbulence profilers operated during several campaigns between 2007 and 2009. Instruments used are SL-SLODAR, DIMM, Elevated DIMM, MASS, Lunar

  • Star formation in AGN hosts in GOODS-N
Sensitive Herschel far-infrared observations can break degeneracies that were inherent to previous studies of star formation in high-z AGN hosts. Combining PACS 100 and 160 μm observations of the GOODS-N field with 2 Ms Chandra data, we detect 20% of X-ray AGN individually at >3σ. The host far-infrared luminosity of AGN with L2-10 keV ≈ 1043 erg s
