  • Prominence Mass Supply and the Cavity
A prevalent but untested paradigm is often used to describe the prominence-cavity system: the cavity is under-dense because it is evacuated by supplying mass to the condensed prominence. The thermal non-equilibrium (TNE) model of prominence formation offers a theoretical framework to predict the thermodynamic evolution of the prominence and the

  • Orbital and physical properties of planets and their hosts: new insights on planet formation and evolution
Aims: We explore the relations between physical and orbital properties of planets and properties of their host stars to identify the main observable signatures of the formation and evolution processes of planetary systems. Methods: We used a large sample of FGK dwarf planet-hosting stars with stellar parameters derived in a homogeneous way from the

  • On the Molar Extinction Coefficients of the Electronic Absorption Spectra of C60 and C70 Fullerenes Radical Cation
Fullerene C60 and C70 were discovered in 2010 by means of infrared spectroscopy in a series of astrophysical objects like for example planetary and protoplanetary nebulae and reflection nebulae. These discoveries suggest that C60 and C70 must be widespread in the interstellar medium and may contribute as neutral species or as radical cation (C60+•

  • No Evidence for a Dependence of the Mass-Size Relation of Early-type Galaxies on Environment in the Local Universe
The early-type galaxy (ETG) mass-size relation has largely been studied to understand how these galaxies assembled their mass. One key observational result of the last years is that massive galaxies increased their size by a factor of a few at fixed stellar mass from z ~ 2. Hierarchical models favor minor mergers as a plausible driver of this size

  • Milliarcsec-scale radio emission of ultraluminous X-ray sources: steady jet emission from an intermediate-mass black hole?
The origin of the high X-ray luminosities of most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) still remains poorly understood. Most of the scenarios proposed to explain their nature assume that ULXs are powered by accretion on to a black hole (BH). In this case, the detection of compact radio emission and the location of the ULXs in the Fundamental Plane (X

  • Microlensing of Quasar Ultraviolet Iron Emission
We measure the differential microlensing of the UV Fe II and Fe III emission line blends between 14 quasar image pairs in 13 gravitational lenses. We find that the UV iron emission is strongly microlensed in four cases with amplitudes comparable to that of the continuum. Statistically modeling the magnifications, we infer a typical size of r_s\sim
