Description
Results are presented on optical and near-IR photometry of cometary
nebula 1548 C27, together with associated high and intermediate
resolution spectroscopy of both the nebular core and jet outflow. Two IR
sources were found, one of which, IRS 2, is clearly a reddened
main-sequence star, the other, IRS 1, being a probable Herbig Ae/Be type
central star with luminosity about 100 solar luminosities, distance
about 0.9 kpc, and extinction about 5 mag. The spectroscopy of the
nebular core shows evidence for both P-Cygni profiles, and a range of
neutral and ionic line velocities consistent with an accelerated outflow
with a terminal velocity greater than 700 km/sec. The spectroscopy of
the jet outflow feature suggests a typical FWHM of about 70 km/sec, and
a more-or-less constant line-of-sight velocity, suggesting little if any
flow deceleration.
