When a gas is heated and we observe the light it emits – its spectrum, that is – we find that it produces bright lines at specific wavelengths, unique sets for each chemical element that makes up the gas, the equivalent to finger prints. Astrophysicists analyse these lines, called “emission lines”, to determine the composition and physical properties of objects in the Universe. They are used, for example, in the detection of remote objects, such as active galactic nuclei, quasars and primitive galaxies, and are fundamental in the study of star formation and metallicity in galaxies.
This eighteenth Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics is dedicated to the detection and analysis of astrophysical objects with emission lines, with particular emphasis on the role to be played by large ground-based telescopes such as the GTC (Gran Telescopio CANARIAS) and space telescopes. This Winter School, organized by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), with the collaboration of the Local Government (Cabildo) of Tenerife, will take place from 20 November to 1 December at the Congress Centre in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife).
The lessons will be given by twelve experts, who will give participants the opportunity to widen their knowledge in various aspects and applications of emission lines, not only from a theoretical perspective but also in practice. The students will also have the opportunity to learn about competitive research projects in this field, both currently under way and planned for the future.
Forty-eight doctoral students and recent PhDs from nineteen different countries whose studies relate in some way to the theme of this year’s School will be participating. The classes will be complemented with visits to the IAC’s headquarters in La Laguna (Tenerife) on 23 November, the Observatorio del Teide in Izaña (Tenerife) on 21 November and the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in Garafía (La Palma) on 29 November.
