Next Monday, April 23rd, the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Garafía, La Palma) will be the scene of the première of the film “The Laws of Thermodynamics”, directed by Mateo Gil from Gran Canaria. This performance will be attended by the director himself, by the Councillor of Tourism of the Cabildo of La Palma, Alicia Vanoostende, and the Director of the GTC, Romano Corradi. Scientific personalities, and people from the world of the cinema will also attend, along with other local authorities.
The event, organized by GRANTECAN in collaboration with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), the La Palma Film Commission, and the Department of Tourism of the Cabildo of La Palma, will start with a press conference, which will be followed by the showing of the film. Afterwards there will be a debate in which those present can talk with the director, who will explain, with anecdotes, how the film was made.
As well as this presentation today, Friday, at 20:00 o’clock, there will be a special showing for university students in the Main Theatre of the University of La Laguna (ULL) at which the film director will be present as well as Eva Villaver, doctor in Astrophysics from the ULL, and Professor in the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Autonomous University of Madrid. And on Saturdya, 21st April, at 20:00 hours there will be an open showing, with tickets which can be obtained at the Museum of Science and the Cosmos, with Mateo Gil and Antonio Mampaso, a researcher at the IAC.
About the film and the director
The film was shown at the opening of the Málaga Film Festival, and has just obtained the prize for best Director at the Miami Festival. The film combines romantic comedy with scientific documentary, including interviews with scientists, among them physicists and astrophysicists from the IAC, GRANTECAN, THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND THE COSMOS, and the University of La Laguna. “The documentary is a type of film with a very specific style, and “The Laws of Thermodynamics” takes advantage of this to get an original take on romantic themes” says Gil.
The film’s main character is Manel, a physicist who sets out to who how his failure in a relationship was determined by the laws of physics themselves, above all by the three laws of thermodynamics. “The subject underlying the film is whether or not we have free will. ¿Should web lame ourselves for everything that goes wrong with our relation, or should we relax and think that whatever goes wrong does not depend on us?” explains the director.
Mateo Gil has made the full length films “Nobody knows anybody” (1999, nominated for the Goya award for the best new director) “Blackthorn” (2010 nominated for the Goya for the best director), and “Realive” (Lázaro Project, 2015). “The Laws of Thermodynamics” is his fourth full length film. As scriptwriter he participated in the film by Marcelo Piñeyro “The Method” (2005, Goya award for the best adapted script) and in the films by Alejandro Amenábar “Thesis” (2006, plot, awarded the Goya for the best original script) “ Open your eyes” (1997, nominated for the Goya for the best original script) “Out to Sea” (2004, awarded the Goya for the best original script) and Ágora (2009, awarded the Goya for the best original script).
