At the inauguration of the festival there were speeches by Garik Israelian, the director of STARMUS 2014, Rafael Rebolo, the director of the IAC, Carmen Delia Herrera, councilor of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the Island Parliament,e Juan Ruiz Alzola, Director Generial of the Canarian Agency for Research, Innovation, and the the Information Society ACIISI re[resenting the President of the Autonomous Regional Government of the Canaries, and the members of the advisory council to the festival, which is formed by eminent musicians and well known scientists among them Stephen Hawking.
In the inaugural act there was also participation by Robert Williams ex Presdent of the INternational Astronomical Union, the Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first person to walk in space in 1965 and also the lecturers of the first session the physicist and Nobel Laureate Robert Wilson, the editor of Astronomy Magazine, David Eicher, the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkings, and the anthropologist Katerina Harvati. The astrophysicist, musician, singer and composer Brian May showed the official video of Starmus 2014, while Garik Israelian presented the book of the previous Starmus festival, which is on sale, and with a possible surprise, because one in six of these books has the fingerprints of Stephen Hawking.
