Outstanding professionals from the "III Programme for Brazilian Leaders" organized by the Council Spain-Brazil Foundation visited, during December 12th and 13th, the headquarters of the Instituto de Astrofísisca de Canarias (IAC) in La Laguna, and the Teide Observatory in Izaña (Tenerife). The Secretary General of the Foundation, Rafael Dezcallar Mazarredo and the participants in this third edition, Carlos E. Higa Matsumoto, Deputy Director for International Affairs in the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications; Daniela Lazzaro, joint director and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Brazil; Reinaldo Ramos de Carvalho, President of the Brazilian Astronomical Society; and Jose E. Krieger, Professor of Genetics and Molecular Cardiology, and Head of the Department of International Relations at the University of Sao Paolo, were welcomed to the Institute by the Director of the IAC, Rafael Rebolo. They were shown round the Instrumentation Division and were told about the main lines of research and the technological projects which are carried out here; special attention was paid to the scientific collaborations between the IAC and Brazilian research centres.
Then, accompanied by the IAC Deputy Director, Carlos Martínez, and the researcher Javier Licandro, visited the Teide Observatory and some of its telescopic facilities. In the afternoon, the Brazilian leaders traveled to La Palma with the Research Coordinator, Enric Pallé, to meet the Centro de Astrofísica de La Palma (CALP) and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on Tuesday, December 13th, with its administrator, Juan Carlos Pérez Arencibia.
This meeting aims to promote scientific, technological, research, cultural and academic cooperation between Brazil and Spain, as well as to achieve a closer relationship between professionals in the sector and the promotion of Spanish research among Brazilian institutions. For this reason, the Spain-Brazil Council Foundation has invited a select group of high-profile Brazilian professionals who, during December 12th and 16th, will meet some of the reference centers for scientific and technological research in Spain, such as the IAC.
