The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) has finished, during October, with the help of FEDER funds, the renewal of the corporate network of the Canary Observatories, which means that the connected User Institutions will be able, with the new equipment, to augment their current connection capacity from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.
The newly installed network, based on Cisco Nexus 77K equipment, will allow in the future connections of 100 Gbps as well as the availability of technology of the latest generation. By means of this renewal, the IACNET network is ready and lined up with the imminent arrival of the new RedIRIS network which will permit continued growth in velocity with the necessary updating for future scientific projects, which will need ever-increasing connectivity.
A research centre such as the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, which has the Severo Ochoa seal of excellence, must have the best technology which allows it to face the technological challenges posed by research at the highest level. For that reason, this new network will ensure that the IAC continues to be a point of reference in the international context, improving its capacity to organize and carry out its research work and participating in those scientific projects needing maximum connectivity.
Part of this project has been financed by the subsidy “INSIDE 4.3 REDIRIS NOVA Agreement of the Strategic Plan OO CC 2017-220” with reference code ICTS-2019-03-IAC-12 in the framework of the agreement “Scientific and technical infrastructures and Institutional Services for the Strategic Development of the Canary Observatories (INSIDE-OOCC)”, signed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, and cofinanced with FEDER Funds from the Operative Pluriregional Programme for Spain FEDER 2014-2020, included in the Map of Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS)”.
