For ten days, more than sixty doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from different countries participated in the XXXI Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics, which this year focused on computational fluid dynamics for astrophysical uses. Its participants, more than 30% were women, which is considered one of the successes of this School of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC).
The design of complex algorithms with modern computer architectures and code optimization to achieve maximum performance has a large number of applications for differents fields of astrophysical research, but also in areas as diverse as aerospace engineering, meteorological simulation, design and analysis of industrial systems or biological engineering.
In this latest edition of the Winter School of the IAC, held in the Aulario of the Guajara Campus of the University of La Laguna, researchers from universities and institutes from more than twenty countries were counted to share the new advances and challenges in the fluid dynamics The quality of the conferences exceeded expectations and was appreciated by the students as it helped to maintain their interest in all the subjects of the School, despite its great variety. The interaction between students from different fields of Astrophysics was encouraged by grouping them into practical classes. These exercises consisted of conducting small simulations designed by teachers using a variety of public codes for Astrophysics with the LaPalma Supercomputer, one of the nodes of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES), thanks to the help of the IAC Computer Services. There was also a poster session where students could present their work. The organizers of this School highlight that 22 of the participants were women, which is considered one of the school's greatest successes. Some of these students were able to participate thanks to a special fund granted by the IAC and distributed in accommodation grants, plane tickets and discounts on registration.
