The Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and its Observatories del Teide (Tenerife) and the Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma) are all cooperating with the STARMUS 2014 initiative, in similar terms as the previous event of 2011. This International Festival of Knowledge will also have the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife and the International Astronomical Union.
Under the slogan "Beginnings: the making of the modern cosmos" (Origins: how the modern cosmos was made), STARMUS 2014 will be held from 22 to 28 September in Tenerife and La Palma, and will have special guest speakers including several Nobel Prize winners, such as Physicist Robert Wilson, for his discovery of radiation from cosmic microwave background, and chemist Harold Kroto, for his research on carbon molecules called "fullerenes".
Other confirmed speakers include biologist and scientist Richard Dawkins, some legendary astronauts, and the creator and director of the STARMUS Festival and IAC astrophysicist Garik Israelian.
In addition to lectures and discussions, STARMUS 2014 are holding a round table in the facilities of the Gran Telescope Canarias (GTC) with astronomers, physicists and engineers, a star party at the foot of Mount Teide, a contest of Astrophotography and a music concert by well-known artists.
