Elsa López visited, during the morning of September 9th, the Teide Observatory at Izaña (Tenerife), in the Framework of the multidisciplinary project of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) “In a certain place in the Universe…..”, which blends astronomy and literature, motivated by the IVth centenary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes. This writer, who was recently awarded the Gold Medal de Canarias 2016, was the first of a series of literary personalities invited to get to know the Canary Island Observatories, and with her visit to the Teide Observatory, which had been postponed, she finished the visit.

Accompanied by the Alfred Rosenberg, an IAC astrophysicist specializing in outreach, Elsa López went round a number of the various telescopes at the Observatory, among them the Solar Laboratory, the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT), the QUIJOTE, experiment, and the Optical Ground Station (OGS): Finally she made an observation of the sun using a telescope yielding an image in Halpha.

The project “In a certain place in the Universe….” Invites the participating authors to write a short story inspired by the universe, and thus to place their vision of astronomy and astrophysical work in a volume of short stories which will be used in a project aimed at helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. This is an IAC project, in collaboration with the scientific institutions making up the Canary Island Observatories, and the Museum of Science and the Cosmos of Museums of Tenerife, with the support of the Cervantes Institute and funding from the Severo Ochoa Programme.
